The CHA's Computer Kids program was
designed to help put residents of the CHA's conventional and Section 8
housing on a level playing field in the educational arena. Through the
Computer Kids program, donated computers are placed in the homes of public
housing and Section 8 residents. These machines are older models, and come
loaded with Windows 3.1 and a variety of educational software.
Here's how the program works:
- Interested families submit an
application for the program to the management office in their
community or to the CHA Central Office.
- The CHA reviews these applications and
chooses recipients based on input from the management office and the
Section 8 Office. Factors considered during the selection process
include the number of children in each household, school grades,
extracurricular activities, and participation in KOBAN, scouting,
"Climbing to Success," or Family Self-Sufficiency programs.
- Although the CHA retains ownership of
the computer after it is placed in the household, the lease agreement,
which must be signed by the recipient, entitles the family to free use
of the computer.
- If the family transfers to another CHA
or Section 8 property, the computer transfers with them. If the family
moves out of public/Section 8 housing, the computer is returned to the
CHA.
- A part-time CHA Computer Technician
installs and services the computers. Service and
support for CHA computers can be obtained by calling the CHA Computer
Kids Hotline
at 254-3886 ext. 322.

- Latimer Manor Community Center -
