Columbia Housing Authority to Open Section 8 Waiting List

Columbia, S.C. – Columbia Housing Authority will open the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list on April 5, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The list will remain open on the second Monday of each quarter, including July 9 and Oct. 9, 2007, until further notice.

During these times, individuals and families who are interested in applying for the program may submit an application in ONE of the following ways:

·   Electronically by visiting www.chasc.org and clicking on “How to Apply”

·   In person at the Cecil Tillis Center, 2111 Simpkins Lane, next to Dollar General on 2101 Oak Street.  Applications will not be accepted at the CHA Main Office, 1917 Harden Street.

Individuals planning to apply online must have Windows XP or higher, Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher, and e-mail software such as Outlook Express installed on their computer.  CHA encourages all potential online applicants to test their computer’s ability to submit an application prior to April 5 by visiting www.chasc.org and clicking on the link under “How to Apply.”

Whether a person applies online or in person, applications will be added to the waiting list by the date and time in which they were received.  When applying, applicants should have available the social security numbers and birth dates for everyone planning to live in their household.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance to individuals and families with low incomes who wish to live in homes in the private rental market, but cannot afford market rental rates.  Participants pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and the Section 8 program subsidizes the rent balance for the property owner.

“The Section 8 program is our most popular housing option,” said CHA Executive Director Gilbert Walker.  “Since the number of people on the Section 8 waiting list has decreased, CHA can now accept new applications and assist more families in Richland County who are in need of affordable housing.”

CHA manages nearly 2,000 conventional public housing units and administers more than 3,100 rental assistance contracts throughout Richland County.  CHA is the third oldest housing authority in the nation and has continuously been recognized by HUD for its successful housing and education programs.
