Columbia Housing Authority to Accept Section 8 Applications

Columbia, S.C. – Columbia Housing Authority will accept applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list on July 9, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cecil Tillis Center, 2111 Simpkins Lane, and online at www.chasc.org.  Applications will not be accepted at the CHA Main Office, 1917 Harden Street.

Whether a person applies online or in person, applications will be added to the waiting list by the date and time in which they were received.  When applying, applicants should have available the Social Security numbers and birth dates for everyone planning to live in their household.

Individuals planning to apply online must have the following installed on their computer: Windows XP or higher, Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher, and e-mail software such as Outlook Express.  CHA encourages all potential online applicants to test their computer’s ability to submit an application prior to July 9 by visiting www.chasc.org and clicking on the link under “How to Apply.”

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance to individuals and families with low incomes who wish to live in homes in the private rental market, but cannot afford market rental rates.  Participants pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and the Section 8 program subsidizes the rent balance for the property owner.

To meet the growing demand for Section 8 assistance, CHA will keep the waiting list open until further notice and accept applications on the second Monday of each quarter, including Oct. 8, 2007.  CHA received nearly 2,400 applications on April 5, 2007 when it opened the waiting list for the first time since 2005.
