Columbia, S.C. – Columbia Housing Authority will accept
applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list Monday,
Jan. 14, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cecil Tillis Center, 2111 Simpkins
Lane, and online at www.chasc.org. After
Jan. 14, CHA will close the Section 8 waiting list until further notice.
Applications
will not be accepted at the CHA Main Office, 1917 Harden Street. Whether a person applies online or in person,
applications will be added to the waiting list by the date and time in which
they were received. When applying,
applicants should have available the Social Security numbers and birth dates
for everyone planning to live in their household.
Individuals
planning to apply online must have the following installed on their computer: Windows
XP or higher, Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher, and e-mail software such as
Outlook Express. CHA encourages all
potential online applicants to test their computer’s ability to submit an
application prior to Jan. 14 by visiting www.chasc.org and clicking on the link
under “How to Apply.”
The
Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance to
individuals and families with low incomes who wish to live in homes in the
private rental market, but cannot afford market rental rates. Participants pay 30 percent of their adjusted
gross income for rent and utilities, and the Section 8 program subsidizes the
rent balance for the property owner.
CHA
received over 6,000 applications for Section 8 assistance on just three days in
2007. On April 5, 2007, CHA opened the
waiting list for the first time since 2005.
