Columbia Housing
Authority Receives $250,000 Grant
for Self-Sufficiency Programs
Columbia, S.C. – Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) has been awarded a
$250,000 Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Grant from the Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The
funds will be used for training programs to help public housing residents become
self-sufficient and independent of government assistance.
For
the next three years, CHA will be able to fund education, employment and homeownership
programs that will create avenues for success and eliminate barriers often
encountered on the path to self-sufficiency.
In addition, CHA will provide residents with supportive services to help
them find and maintain employment.
“We
are thrilled to have another opportunity to better serve our public housing
population,” said CHA Executive Director Gilbert Walker. “These self-sufficiency programs will allow
residents to learn new skills and build confidence that they can then apply in
the workplace.”
CHA manages nearly 2,000 conventional
public housing units and administers more than 3,100 rental assistance
contracts throughout Richland County.
CHA is the third oldest housing authority in the nation and has
continuously been recognized by HUD for its successful housing and education
programs.
