Columbia Housing
Authority Needs Old Computers
Agency Upgrades and Loans Used Machines
to Low-Income Youth
Columbia, S.C. – If your business is preparing to upgrade its computers, consider
donating the old machines to the Columbia Housing Authority Computer Kids
Program. Businesses and individuals can
drop off their obsolete computers at the CHA Main Office, 1917 Harden Street, between
8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., or CHA will pick them up.
Call 254-3886, ext. 243 to make arrangements. All
When
CHA receives the used computers, it refurbishes each machine and installs a
variety of educational software and basic word processing programs. Then, CHA loans the upgraded computers to
public housing and Section 8 youth so they can use them to complete school
assignments and broaden their general knowledge of technology.
Since
1997, the generous donations of many businesses and individuals have allowed
CHA to place more than 1,100 computers in homes where children might otherwise
have little or no access to this technology outside of school. Previous donors include the Bose Corporation,
Midlands Technical College, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. When a family leaves CHA housing, the
computer is returned, upgraded and then loaned to another family.
CHA manages nearly 1,900 conventional
public housing units and administers more than 3,100 rental assistance
contracts throughout Richland County.
CHA is the third oldest housing authority in the nation and has
continuously been recognized by HUD for its successful housing and education
programs.
