Columbia Housing
Authority Youth Receive College Scholarships
Columbia, S.C. – Four Columbia Housing Authority youth have received nearly $25,000 in
college scholarships from Mungo Homes and Carolinas Council of Housing,
Redevelopment and Codes Officials (CCHRCO).
Marquita Frazier, Anita
Sims, Krystal Cosby (CA Johnson
Preparatory Academy graduates) and Johnathon
Moore (Eau Claire High School graduate) will receive $1,250 each year from
Mungo Homes as long as they maintain a “B” average or better.
In addition, the students were
awarded four of only seven available one-year scholarships from CCHRCO, which
accepted applications from housing agencies throughout North and South
Carolina. CCHRCO awarded $1,000 to Anita,
Krystal and Johnathon, and
$1,500 to Marquita for earning the highest overall
points on her scholarship application.
“We are so proud of these
students and what they have accomplished,” said Gilbert Walker, CHA executive
director. “They make great role models for
other young people and demonstrate how working hard in school will put you on a
path to success in life.”
All four students will start
their freshman year in South Carolina colleges this fall. Anita will attend Converse College, Marquita will attend Clemson University, Krystal will attend Columbia College and Johnathon will attend Coastal Carolina University.
CHA manages nearly 1,900 conventional
public housing units and administers more than 3,100 rental assistance
contracts throughout Richland County.
CHA is the third oldest housing authority in the nation and has
continuously been recognized by HUD for its successful housing and education
programs.
