SENIOR HOUSING

Over 700 one-bedroom and efficiency units are available for seniors (those over 50). CHA is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and provisions are made to accommodate handicapped persons at all communities. Units are conveniently located near bus lines, churches and shopping facilities.

To Apply:

To apply for senior housing, a person must fill out a pre-application card at the CHA Central Office, 1917 Harden Street, in Columbia. Eligible applicants are placed on a waiting list according to the time of application. The average waiting period is three to six months for high rises and 12 to 18 months for other communities.

The next step is a screening interview in which previous housing records, annual income, financial responsibility, respect for others' property and criminal record are considered in determining one's suitability for housing. Other factors such as medical needs and where family members live are also taken into account.

When an apartment becomes available, the applicant is contacted by the community manager regarding rent and security deposit payment.

In the high rise communities, utilities are included in a resident's monthly rent. In other apartment complexes, residents make arrangements for utility service and are responsible for the monthly charges.

Resident Services

Program Coordinators, often with the help of residents' Community Clubs, plan a wide variety of activities for senior residents. Activities include field trips, museum tours, holiday dinners, health screenings, arts and crafts, dances, cook-outs and exercise classes.
