Marion Griffin
Allen Benedict Court 1940-1945

A resident of Allen Benedict Court from 1940 until 1945, Marion L. Griffin realized her gift for art at an early age. Now an internationally known, self-taught artist, Griffin credits many of her works to memories of her early childhood in Allen Benedict Court. Her outstanding talent has won her many accolades, and her works have been featured in museums, galleries, colleges, universities, libraries, private and commercial organizations. Her artistic influence has spanned the globe through exhibitions in locations such as New York , Massachusetts, Connecticut, Denmark, and Sweden. Her work has also attracted the attention of the royal family of Denmark. Griffin has shared her talents with the Columbia community in many ways over the years, most recently through the donation of a painting to be auctioned in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia.

Curtis Maffett
Gonzales Gardens 1970-1972

A resident of Gonzales Gardens from 1970 until 1972, Curtis Maffett has committed 18 years of his career to protecting, saving and serving the residents of Columbia as part of the City’s Fire Department. Maffett began his tenure at the Fire Department in 1987 as Fire Captain. Since that time, he has moved through the ranks, serving in several capacities including Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Support Services, and Fire Battalion Chief. Today, Maffet is the Assistant Chief of Human Resources, and is responsible for improving policies and procedures that affect the safety of the City’s fire fighters.

Dr. Carlos Smith
Allen Benedict Court  1948-1954

A resident of Allen Benedict Court from 1948 until 1954, Dr. Carlos L. Smith has dedicated his life to helping the youth of Columbia achieve their dreams through education. Smith has spent 28 years of his career with Richland County School District One (RCSD1), serving in virtually every level of the District in some capacity. Smith currently serves as the District Athletic Director and Assistant to the Deputy Superintendent for RCSD1, as well as Interim Parent Ombudsman and Assistant to the Superintendent. Those who know him well describe Smith as a man of “honor, optimism, enthusiasm, and humility.” During his years with RCSD1, he has initiated many successful programs including the Middle School Congress for Student Leaders and the Annual Coaches Convention. His efforts, and the programs he has helped develop, have touched the lives of thousands of students and encouraged them to demand more from life.
