Columbia received its first mobile recreation vehicle designed to increase opportunities for youth to participate in safe, structured play and recreation in areas where access is limited. The new vehicle, officially named “Mobi-Rec,” is a new, 2014 Chevrolet Express 3500 commercial cutaway van outfitted with a variety of recreation equipment that will travel to select neighborhoods within Columbia. It is the second of its kind in the state of South Carolina.
“Approximately 35 percent of children in South Carolina are overweight or obese1, and adequate exercise is a critical part of living a healthy lifestyle,” said David Lominack, Project Lead for Mobi-Rec in Columbia. “The project’s goal is to provide children in Columbia with the opportunity to exercise through play and recreation. It was a natural fit to partner with the Columbia Housing Authority to deliver this concept in the Midlands, supporting their mission of improving the quality of life for individuals and families in Columbia,” said Lominack.
“The Columbia Housing Authority is thrilled to launch Mobi-Rec in the Midlands and proud to provide a new way for youth, who may not have other outlets, to engage in structured play led by qualified professionals,” said Gil Walker, Executive Director of the Columbia Housing Authority. “Thanks to Mobi-Rec, more of Columbia’s youth will now have an opportunity to actively play, which supports their childhood development and promotes healthy living and positive socialization.”
The vehicle was made possible through sponsorship support from Palmetto Health, Mungo Homes, Aflac, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, and WellCare Health Plan, Inc. Additionally, these organizations have committed to exploring future opportunities to partner with Mobi-Rec to promote healthy lifestyles for youth in Columbia.
